Florence On Line :: Car Rental & Travel Tips :: New ZTL Traffic Light

New ZTL Traffic Light

There are some new traffic lights up that let you know when it is okay to drive into the ZTL. The pictures below are from the entrance in front of the Biblioteca Nazionale (I am not how many ZTL entrances have these lights installed). The current mayor of Florence, Matteo Renzi, has announced new plans to make the whole ZTL situation simpler and more friendly to tourism. We'll see how that goes - for now the signs are a decent start.

Here is the location of the above sign:

A poster on the Trip Advisor forum says there are new cameras at the following locations:

"So far, the new ZTL lights have been installed at Borgo San Frediano, Corso Tintori (coming from the National Library), Porta Romana and Piazza Tasso."

Corso Tintori is the one in the pictures above -

Via De Benci has signs not nearly as clear as this. In google streetmaps you can see the camera with no immediate signs for a tourist which will lead to frustration for many.

Via De Benci is not marked as well and may never be - that entrance is not for regular cars, tourists or residents. That is for emergency vehicles and public transport only. It is fairly well marked as you come over the bridge (not that I am defending Florence or this whole system!)

You need to see this map, click on "MOBILITA" in the left column, and then "Varchi ZTL" - those are the only places you can ever enter the ZTL.

The ZTL situation was so confusing to me. If you don't speak italian it's hard to know what you're allowed to do and what you're not. Oh well.

I thought that the traffic lights in the UK could be confusing. That's quite a sign - it looks like much of the text would be too small to read without stopping pretty close!

I agree with Mr. Angry. Text looks smaller and one needs to stop to read it completely. however, it is a good initiative and i am sure they will do many such improvements for tourists.

This is one of the "Corsie Riservati" which you can never drive into. The key here is the red circle with white line - you simply can't enter a sign like this without realizing you screwed up!
